Can menopause start before age 40?

Yes, the menopause milestone can sometimes occur before the age of 40. When this happens it is known as premature menopause.

Premature menopause can have important health implications and usually requires medical assessment.

Premature menopause, primary ovarian insufficiency and early menopause

Menopause is defined as the point when menstrual periods have stopped for 12 consecutive months.

When menopause happens before the age of 40, it is called premature menopause. Primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) is a related condition where the ovaries stop working properly before age 40. Early menopause refers to menopause that occurs between the ages of 40 and 45.

Women with premature, POI and early menopause may experience symptoms similar to natural menopause, including irregular or absent periods, hot flushes, night waking and vaginal dryness.

How common is premature menopause?

Premature and early menopause affects a small proportion of women.

In Australia, most women experience menopause between the ages of 45 and 55, with the average age around 51.

When menopause occurs earlier than expected, medical assessment is important.

When to see a doctor

Premature and early menopause can affect long term health, including bone health and cardiovascular health. If you believe you may be experiencing symptoms of premature or early menopause, it is important to arrange a menopause consultation.

This can provide clarity, allow assessment to confirm the diagnosis and support discussion around treatment options that promote long-term wellbeing.
